Re-Learning Lessons About Fiber

Yarn Or Cloth

The Challenge Is The Same

I have been knitting for about sixteen years now.

When I began knitting, I worked with yarns I could afford. Squeaky yarn was pretty much the norm at first. As I kept knitting, I kept trying different yarns. I did yarn swaps. I fell in love with wool and alpaca and cotton-wool blends. I don’t think I even own any squeaky yarn at the moment. No, wait, I do. I am crocheting a blanket. Those squeaky yarns work great for heavy-duty blankets.

This process of learning about good yarns took years. During those years, I learned a lot of places to buy high-quality yarns cheap. Now I have a nice stash of yarn to work with, as well as arthritis that strikes at the worst times.

I am beginning to get back into sewing. I joined the Cashmerette All Access Club Membership. Among other things, I get one garment pattern to sew per month and a discount on other patterns I buy. I even bought a couple of patterns from Cashmerette before I became a club member. I have yet to sew a single thing. Yet.

I have several duvet covers and sheet sets to use to make wearable muslins using a couple of patterns. I have a stash of fabric. I bought a bunch of bits and pieces here and there. I used to sew things for my daughter when she was younger. I used to sew things for myself when I was a smaller size.

I have been working through plans in the back of my mind, after being in love with shopping on Shein for a while, to sew myself an entire wardrobe. I want to sew things I want to wear.

I recently purchased the Ames jeans pattern from Cashmerette and that’s when I discovered how sewing and knitting are so similar when it comes to materials.

I need denim with stretch to make that pattern for myself. I don’t have the resources yet with the fabric that I have with yarn. I don’t know where the best place is to buy quality fabrics without paying an arm and a leg yet.

What the search for fabric has brought me to is trying to decide how much money is worth spending to create myself a good long-lasting quality garment. How much is too much to spend on the perfect pair of jeans? Forty dollars? Sixty? My husband has been looking online to buy me a pair of jeans made specifically for me and for my measurements. There he found some great resources, for jeans about two or three hundred dollars, per pair. So the forty-five dollars I want to spend on fabric, thread, and accessories to make myself a pair of jeans doesn’t seem like much at all.

So now I am looking at planning myself an entire wardrobe, one piece at a time.

Here are my favorite two books I plan to use for this process:
