The sample in the picture was knit using an unbanded partial skein of yarn. I think it is Plymouth Encore, but don’t quote me on that.
This hat is meant to be roomy and loose, not close fitting, and not tight.
Gauge is roughly 4 stitches to the inch in stockinette stitch.
Loosely cast on 72 stitches.
Carefully join together to begin knitting in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches.
Place a stitch marker to designate the beginning of the round.
Remember to slip the marker as you come to it at the end of every round.
Knit 2×2 ribbing for 2 inches.
In the next round, knit 6, increase 1; repeat around (84 stitches)
Knit until the piece measures 4 ½ inches from cast on edge.
In the next round, knit 6, increase 1; repeat around. (96 stitches)
Knit until the piece measures 7 inches.
Here we will begin decreasing. Switch to double-point needles when your circular needles can no longer accommodate the dwindling number of stitches.
In the next round, knit 10, knit 2 together; repeat around.

Cut yarn, leaving at least a 6-inch tail, if not longer.
Pull yarn through the remaining stitches.
Cinch tightly to close the hole.
Secure the yarn tail.
Weave in all ends.
