A Free Knitting Pattern: The Boobie Hat

Something From The Archives

Yarns used for sample:

Premier Yarns Dream in cream for main body

Lion Brand Wool-Ease in blush heather

Any worsted weight yarn that works to gauge and any colors can be used with this pattern.

Gauge in stockinette stitch is four stitches per one inch.

You will need size 8 US (5 mm) circular needle (or whatever needle gets you gauge), as well as size 8 US double point needles for the decreases.  You can use the magic loop or two circular needles for the decreases, but you will still need double-point needles to complete the nipple part of the hat.

A stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round is also recommended.

This hat is knit from the bottom up.

There are two versions of this hat.  One is a shortie hat that falls basically right at the top of the ear or a little bit above.  The other is a regular version that covers the ears.

Abbreviations:

K = knit

P = purl

K2tog = knit 2 together

Using the cream-colored yarn, loosely cast on 75 stitches.  Place a marker to designate the beginning of the round.  Join your stitches to begin work in the round, careful not to twist the stitches.

Work in K2, P1 rib for one inch.

Next round, K5, increase one stitch and continue to K to the end of the round.

Now, knitting every stitch in the round, work in stockinette until your piece measures 4 ½ inches for the shortie version or 6 inches for the regular version.

Next round, begin your decreases.  Change to double-point needles whenever you need to do so.

Four stitches remain.  Transfer the remaining stitches to a double-point needle.

Work I cord for two to five rows, depending upon how perky you want your nipple.

Work *K2tog* to end of row.

Slide work as if making I cord.  K2tog.

Cut yarn, leaving a six-inch tail.

Thread your yarn tail through a needle, and take your yarn through the center of the nipple/ I cord, and into the inside body of the hat.  Do not pull too hard, or it will deform your nipple.

Secure ends inside the hat.  Weave in all yarn tails.

Enjoy your hat.
